Examples of lengthy questions. How to read it in short time
It is the ability to
pick "key word" in the stem which decides merit.
General rule for reading lengthy question is to read the
last one sentence first. Scan through option. Then pick the key words.
1.
A 73-year-old man complained of a swelling along the
anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) in the anterior cervical
region (anterior triangle). On examination by his physician, a small, firm
swelling was palpated in the submental triangle. It was moveable on the deep
tissues and was not attached to the skin. Similar swellings deeper in the neck
along the course of the internal jugular vein made the region of the SCM
generally swollen. During examination of the man’s mouth, a small carcinomatous
ulcer was detected on the left side of the apex of the man’s tongue. When asked
how long this sore was on his tongue, the man said it has been there for
several months but it was not painful so he ignored it. Which of the following
statements best describes the most likely cause of the swellings in the
submental and lateral regions of the man’s neck?

A 39-year-old woman noticed a swelling in the anterior part
of her neck. A fellow member of her church choir suggested she consult their
family physician because of the swelling, her nervousness, and loss of weight.
During palpation of her neck, the physician determined that her thyroid gland
was enlarged and moved up and down during swallowing. He also detected a slight
protrusion of her eyes, making them appear too widely opened. He also observed
an elevated pulse and tremor of her fingers. He diagnosed her condition as
hyperthyroidism (exophthalmic goiter). When she failed to respond to medical
treatment, he took a biopsy of a hardened part of the swelling in the gland. It
was determined that she had several malignant nodules in her thyroid gland. She
was referred to a surgeon who removed the gland. After the surgery the woman
complained about the weakness of her voice and difficulty in singing her
soprano parts. Which of the following statements best describes the most likely
cause of the woman’s hoarseness after thyroidectomy?

Since there is NO negative marks a tendency is to attempt as
many questions as possible. The risk is that the student who scores more
mistakes is likely to go down in the rank list because those who get same marks
are ranked as per mistakes committed. If two students score 150 marks, the one
with ten mistakes is ranked below the one with eight mistakes. In such
situations the lengthy questions and image based questions decide the rank.
